Abstract Among the numerous treatment technologies for contaminated groundwater, permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) technology plays an increasingly important role in passive interception and in-situ treatment of contaminated groundwater due to its good in-situ treatment effect, wide treatment range, long longevity and good economic benefits. In this paper, the most critical filling reaction medium in PRBs technology was taken as the research object, and five commonly used reaction mediums, such as zero-valent iron, activated carbon, inorganic minerals, clay and solid waste as the precursor materials of the reaction mediums, and the selection basis of reaction mediums were expounded. Meanwhile, the typical cases of PRBs technology in practical engineering applications were introduced, and the existing problems and future development of PRBs technology were summarized and prospected. This paper may provide useful support for the development of long-term efficient and environmentally friendly PRBs reaction mediums.
