Abstract Lianyungang is a coastal city in Jiangsu Province, China. With a city population near five million, human activities can have a proficient impact on the coastal environment. Ongoing surveillance and control measures would benefit the preservation of the marine flora and fauna of the habitat, which is the key for sustainable development. Here the data were collected from the coastal area of the city from February 2011 to January 2016, to evaluate the current environmental statues and to identify issues from the region throughout all four seasons. The evaluated outcome indicated that the aquatic coastal environment of the city, overall, was in fit conditions during the five-year period. With the average annual value of DIN exceeded the Class Ⅱ seawater quality standard and in a trend of gradual increase. Further investigation and surveillance measures were warranted. Other environmental pollution factors identified during this investigation were DIP, COD and oils. Note that the study area has reached the state of eutrophication during the period this study is conducted, for which the potential eutrophication status showed that the N/P value has gradually increased. Furthermore, the evaluation has identified a mild organic pollution level throughout most seasons. To conclude, the present environmental situation of Lianyungang coastal area ecological environment remains in fit conditions. However, the elevating levels of several pollutants and eutrophication indicate the necessity for continual surveillance to maintain the sustainable ecological environment in Lianyungang. This study has great significance because they contribute to an assessment on the status of ecology and environment and ecological environmental change in Lianyungang coastal area. The results have important meaning in sustainable development and practical application value.
