The aging behavior of degradable plastic PBAT under the interaction of environmental factors

Abstract

In order to study the aging behavior of degradable plastics under the interaction of different environmental factors, poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) was used as the target. The aging process and potential mechanism of PBAT under the interaction of different factors were investigated by setting uniform and interactive experiments with temperature, humidity and light as factors. The results of multi-factor interaction experiments combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed that humidity had the greatest influence on the aging behavior of PBAT, and temperature had the least influence on the aging behavior of PBAT. The aging effect was the most obvious under the conditions of temperature 30.0 °C, humidity 60% and ultraviolet light. The changes of chemical bonds and crystallinity of PBAT during different aging processes were further analyzed by X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that under the interaction of humidity and ultraviolet light, the carbon-oxygen double bond of PBAT decreased and the carbon-oxygen single bond increased. The carbon-oxygen double bond was destroyed to form a carboxyl group. The oxygen atoms in some functional groups replaced the hydrogen atoms, and the behavior of gain and loss of electrons appeared. The small molecule CO₂ and π-π bonds were formed on the surface; in this interactive aging process, the crystallinity of PBAT increased.
