Research on spatial-temporal evolution and driving factors of phosphorus footprint of household consumption in China |

Abstract The spatial-temporal pattern and the driving forces of food-related phosphorus footprint in China were analyzed based on a developed phosphorus footprint concept and calculation model. The results show that the phosphorus resource footprint (PFr) and pollution footprint (PFp) in China grew 6 and 4 fold during 1978~2018, reaching 7159kt and 787kt in 2018. Urban residents were the major sources, accounting for 67% and 64% of PFr and PFp in 2018, respectively. Both urban and rural PFr were dominated by animal-sourced food, while PFp were mainly sourced from the upstream process, such as crop farming and aquaculture. Spatially, PFr in China showed a decreasing trend from the eastern areas to the western regions. Besides, the phosphorus footprint showed agglomeration characteristics in the eastern coastal areas, which were identified as key areas for the management of phosphorus footprint. Although phosphorus footprint was affected by various factors, the phosphorus use efficiency, consumption level, and dietary structure were the key factors driving the increase of phosphorus footprint, which should be paid more attention to alleviate the pressure from the activities of phosphorus utilization.
