Effects of acidified oyster shell powder on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella sp. |

Abstract The impact of acidified oyster shell powder (AOSP) on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella sp. was explored in this research. The results showed that high concentrations of AOSP could promote the growth of M. aeruginosa but inhibit the growth of Chlorella sp.. Specifically, there were no significant differences observed in the growth of M. aeruginosa and Chlorella sp. when compared to the control group at the concentration of 10mg/L. The growth of M. aeruginosa was significantly promoted when the concentration reached 20mg/L (P<0.05). Whereas, the growth of Chlorella sp. was significantly inhibited (P<0.05) Subsequent research showed that the concentration of Ca2+ in the culture medium was positively correlated with the density of M. aeruginosa, but negatively correlated with the density of Chlorella sp.. Meanwhile, the absorption-sedimentation rate of Ca2+ in the M. aeruginosa group was obviously higher than that in the Chlorella sp. group. Thus, we speculated that the difference in the absorption-sedimentation rate of Ca2+ may be related to the cellular structure, photosynthesis of M. aeruginosa and Chlorella sp..
