Abstract:TM/ETM+ images of four periods were used to derive Shanghai’s land surface temperature (LST). The spatio-temporal distribution of UHI in Shanghai and its districts in the last 10 years was analyzed and quantified with the UHI ratio index. Study results indicate that the area with high LST shows a trend of decrease in shanghai, but characterized with distinctive multiple centers in spatial distribution in the last decade. Central Distric, Pudong District, Minhang District and Baoshan District were found to be the four major UHI centers of Shanghai, while the city’s suburbs are increasingly becoming new UHI centers. With the rapid spreading of construction in last 10 years, the UHI of Shanghai characterized with multiple centers in spatial distribution. And the thermal environment of Shanghai is formed by multiple UHI centers. In order to reduce the spreading of UHI in Shanghai, preventive ecological planning is urgently needed for these regions.
