Abstract:An investigation on the cost for reducing total COD and ammonia nitrogen loads in 12 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) showed that the operation cost calculated by the amount of treated wastewater could not reflect the cost to treat the pollutants correctly. Within the treatment capacity of WWTPs, the electrical energy consumption for elimination of one kilogram COD or ammonia nitrogen COD decreased as the load reduction of COD or ammonia nitrogen increases, which became stable finally. Therefore, the model to determine the cost for reducing total COD and ammonia nitrogen loads was established based on energy consumption. The impact factors include influent and effluent concentration, treatment capacity and hydraulic load ratio. The deduction from this model would encourage WWTPs to reduce more loads of COD and ammonia nitrogen.
