Abstract:Combined with estimation of the discharge fluxes of pollutant sources and statistical analysis of the pollutant concentration, this paper employed a 3D numerical model to simulate the pollutant transport and seawater exchange processes in the Dapeng Bay. The model results were utilized to calculate the seawater exchange rate and self-exchange period, and to analyze the contributions of seawater exchange and bio-chemical degradation to the self-purification in the bay. It was difficult for the pollutants inside the bay to transport out of the bay as the tidal range was as small as 1m, and the tidal current was weak, thus the self-purification of the water in the bay relied mainly on the bio-chemical degradation, rather than on the seawater exchange between the inner bay and the outer bay. Both the water quality measurements and modeling results indicated that the waters in the Tolo Harbor and Shatoujiao were hard to be exchanged and susceptible to pollution due to large pollutant input and shallow water depth there.
