Abstract:During April and May, 2009, gas and particulate phase samples were obtained at Mount Heng to evaluate the levels of PCB concentrations in the atmosphere of that region. The mean value of the 7 indicator-PCBs detected by GC was 180.51 pg/m3,while the dominate PCB congener was PCB52. The concentration of PCBs at Mount Heng was at a high level compared with high-mountain sites overseas. Back trajectory analysis was conducted to classify PCB concentrations influenced by different air directions. Airflows coming from North China carried more pollutants. The outcome of principal component analysis showed that the sources of PCBs in this region could be divided into three main parts: one represents PCB products made in foreign countries, another includes the release of incinerators , industrial processes such as paper bleaching and oils used in transformers or others which were made in China , and the last are paint additives containing PCBs.
