Abstract:A pilot-scale UASB/anoxic/aerobic membrane bioreactor was developed and operated for 54 days for landfill leachate treatment. Experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the system for COD removal, and ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) removal under hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 10h, 12.8h, and 15h, respectively. The experimental results showed that the optimal COD removal rate reached at 94.96% under the HRT of 12.8h; while the NH4-N removal rate improved with the increase of HRT; both pollutant removal rates were high and stable, indicating a good performance of the MBR system. Results also indicated that the membrane presented lower fouling as HRT increased, and that the gel layer accumulated on the membrane surface was the key factor that caused membrane fouling.
