Abstract:The removal characteristics of two typical steroid estrogens (SEs)-estrone (E1) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in three aerobic MBRs at different nitrification loads were investigated. When nitrification loads were 6.19, 0.35and 10.58mg/(gMLSS·d), the average removal efficiencies of E1were 72.33%, 64.06% and 71.77% with the corresponding removal loads of 29.98, 23.06and 27.66mg/(gMLSS·d), respectively; The average removal efficiencies of EE2were 55.40%, 42.87% and 58.90% with the corresponding removal loads of 22.39, 16.54and 23.58 mg/(gMLSS·d), respectively. The removal of E1was always better than that of EE2. The nitrification loads of MBRs displayed a linear correlation with the number of ammonia oxidizing bacteria. However, SEs removal loads were linearly correlated with neither the number of ammonia oxidizing bacteria nor the nitrification loads. SEs removal load was significantly improved when the nitrification load was enhanced from 0.35mg/(gMLSS·d) to 6.19mg/(gMLSS·d). However, a further increase of the nitrification load up to 10.58mg/(gMLSS·d) did not effectively improve the SEs removal efficiencies.
