Abstract Particulate organonitrates are a key component connecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and ozone formation. This study provides a thorough review on sources, formation mechanism, measurement techniques and ambient concentrations of particulate organonitrates based on previous studies for over a decade. A schematic diagram was given to illustrate the current knowledge of transformation mechanism for organonitrates in the atmosphere. We also listed current offline and online measurement techniques, associated with their advantages and disadvantages. Ambient mass concentrations of organonitrates in different field campaigns using mentioned measurement techniques were summarized. In addition, we point out the weakness of current organonitrates research and provide an outlook in future.
