Effects of pure biodiesel blended with PODE on combustion and particulate matter emissions of a marine diesel engine

Abstract:In this paper, D100 (pure diesel), B100 (pure biodiesel) and B90P10 (pure biodiesel and PODE (polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether) blended at a volume ratio of 9:1) were tested on a marine diesel engine. The combustion process and particulate matter emission of the three fuels were experimentally studied. The results show that, compared with D100, the maximum in-cylinder pressures of B100 and B90P10gradually increased, and the crank angles corresponding to the maximum in-cylinder combustion pressures were sequentially advanced. At low load, the peak pressure rise rate, peak heat release rate and the initial combustion temperature of B100 and B90P10 were significantly increased compared with D100. The soot of marine diesel engine can be greatly reduced by B100, and the blending of PODE can further reduce soot emission. At high load and low load, the particle emission factors of B90P10 were 11.80 and 17.77mg/(kW·h), respectively, which were 64.21% and 76.34% lower than those of D100. The total amount of particulate matter emitted by B100 and B90P10 was significantly higher than that of D100, and the increased particles were mainly in the nuclear mode of small particle size.
