Performance of amino acid gemini surfactant co-mixed systems in solubilization of perchloroethylene

Abstract:The amino acid gemini surfactant N, N'-dilauroyl ethylenediamine sodium dipropionate (DLMC) and its co-mixed system were used to improve the solubility of perchloroethylene (PCE) in groundwater and to enhance the removal effect.The primary biodegradability of DLMC was determined and it was co-mixed with short-chain alcohols (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol) and traditional surfactants including sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), octylphenyl polyoxyethylene ether(TX-100) and polyoxyethylene dehydrated sorbitan monooleate (Tween80). The results showed that the biodegradability of DLMC was over 99%, possessing good biodegradability. Two formulations of DLMC-IPA (1:4) and DLMC-Tween80 (1:1) were selected for PCE-contaminated column flushing and their solubilizing concentrations were 18329 and 16906mg/L at 40g/L, respectively. DLMC-Tween80(1:1) showed the best flushing effect on PCE-contaminated columns with a flushing efficiency of 9.87g PCE per liter of flushing solution, which was 16% higher than that of single DLMC system.
